Protected strawberry production can improve crop protection, working conditions and timing, but the business case depends on variety, planting material, substrate, pollination, cooling and achievable selling price.
Start with the market objective
Define whether the project serves premium fresh, wholesale or processing demand and obtain the buyer’s size, appearance, residue and packaging specification. A premium price is meaningful only for the share that reaches that grade, during the weeks when the market will buy it.
Define the complete crop system
Variety, plant type, planting date and chill requirement shape the season before the greenhouse is chosen. Raised substrate systems can improve working conditions and crop control but add planting-material, gutter, drainage and fertigation dependencies. Humidity, condensation, pollination and fruit temperature all influence pack-out.
Protect operating continuity
Harvest and grading require careful, repeated labour; weak handling can destroy value created in the greenhouse. Hygiene and scouting must control botrytis and other crop threats, while immediate cooling and an unbroken cold chain protect shelf life. The downside case should include planting-material loss, lower premium pack-out and delayed market entry.
