How should the greenhouse support this crop?

Bell pepper is a long-cycle crop in which temperature influences flower quality, fruit set, internode length and balance between leaves and fruit. The greenhouse strategy must manage both daytime radiation and night temperature while limiting humidity around flowers and the crop head.

Ventilation, screening, heating and air movement are selected as one climate package. Hot conditions can impair fruit set and shape; cold or dark conditions can slow development. Production forecasts must respect the seasonal climate and selected colour strategy.

What must irrigation control?

Pepper roots benefit from a stable, aerated substrate and carefully timed drip irrigation. Overly wet conditions weaken root activity, while excessive dry-back can disturb fruit growth and nutrient uptake. Irrigation is adjusted through radiation, crop stage, drain and substrate measurements.

Water quality influences calcium, sodium, bicarbonate and nutrient strategy. Uniform dosing and delivery are important for consistent fruit size and skin quality. Recirculation requires disinfection and active control of nutrient accumulation rather than simple return of drainage.

What must happen every production day?

Plants are trained, pruned and supported throughout a long production period. Teams must understand branch selection, crop load, fruit removal, scouting and harvest maturity. Delayed crop work creates congestion and reduces the percentage of premium-grade fruit.

Harvest and packing standards are part of cultivation. Fruit must be separated by colour, size, shape and skin condition, then handled to avoid pressure and abrasion. Traceability, hygiene and buyer labelling requirements determine the packhouse workflow.

What determines the investable case?

Revenue depends on the proportion of fruit achieving the contracted grade, not only total kilograms. Variety, colour mix, timing, package, local competition and buyer consistency should be tested before the production system is fixed.

The long crop cycle increases exposure to energy, pest, labour and price risk. Feasibility should include establishment time, delayed colour, grade loss, packaging cost and working capital. A robust operation protects margin through quality consistency and market planning.
