How should the greenhouse support this crop?

Strawberry climate management protects flowers, fruit and leaf activity at the same time. Temperature, humidity, light and airflow influence flowering, pollination, fungal pressure, fruit firmness and flavour. Excess humidity around the crop creates quality and disease risk.

Protected production can advance or extend the season, but the target window must be defined. Screening, ventilation, heating or cooling should serve that market window and variety. A greenhouse cannot compensate for unsuitable plant material or an unrealistic seasonal strategy.

Water & root zone

What must irrigation control?

Tabletop and gutter systems use small substrate volumes, so irrigation mistakes appear quickly. Frequent measured doses should match radiation, plant stage and drainage while maintaining oxygen in the root zone. Distribution uniformity is critical across every row.

Source-water analysis determines treatment and nutrient formulation. Drain collection can improve water productivity, but reuse requires disinfection and control of sodium and nutrient balance. Clean nursery water and separation of plant batches reduce biological risk.

Labour & operations

What must happen every production day?

Strawberries require careful planting, flower and runner management, pollination support, scouting and repeated selective harvesting. Labour planning must reflect the variety, plant type, cropping system and expected weekly peak rather than an annual average.

Fruit should be picked into its final or near-final pack wherever possible. Gentle handling, shade and rapid cooling protect firmness and shelf life. Hygiene, traceability and rejection standards need to be understood by every harvest team.

Commercial feasibility

What determines the investable case?

The business case depends on premium timing, flavour, appearance, pack format and short delivery. Marketable first-class fruit, not total picked weight, determines revenue. Plant cost, royalties, pollination, packaging, cooling and high harvest labour must be visible.

Feasibility should test lower grade-out, shorter shelf life, delayed harvest and labour peaks. A strong local market can reward freshness, but the project must prove that buyers will pay the required price throughout the planned production window.
